Kiwanis Fund Raising Project at Lambton Mall

The Kiwanis Club of Sarnia is selling Claxton Fruit Cake at the Lambton Mall on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from now until December 15 unless we sell out before then. . We have a table in the Children’s Play Court area.

Prices for the Claxton Fruit Cake are unchanged from last year. 1 lb cake sells for $7 and a 3 lb box is available for $19

We also have a few Sarnia Souvenir Afghans left at $50.

New this year - The Hockey Hall of Fame has allowed us to sell their Official Hall of Fame Game. It is a fast-paced board game of skill, strategy, knowledge and luck that the entire family will enjoy playing. The game contains hundreds of fascinating trivia questions about the greatest and fastest game on Earth. Suitable for all ages. Cost is $30. We have pre-ordered a few games and if these sell out we will take orders for delivery before Christmas.

Again this year the Kiwanis Clubs in Lambton county will be having a BBQ at the Sarnia Staples Store on London Road from 11 am-3 pm on Saturday September 3rd and Sunday September 4th. As you are hurrying around shopping take a moment to buy a hamburger or hot dog and support the many projects of Kiwanis in Lambton County.

Well, it is here - the 94th Eastern Canada and Caribbean District of Kiwanis Convention is upon us.
All the Lt. Governor Designates are gathered and participating in the 2 days of education to prepare us for our year as LG. We have had wonderful speakers and below are pictures of 2 wonderful gentlemen who are sharing their knowledge about Kiwanis and Leadership.

Kiwanis One Day 2011

The Kiwanis Club of Sarnia along with the Sarnia Lambton Golden K participated in Kiwanis One Day at the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre (LKCC). Each year, Kiwanis clubs around the world join in a day of service and this year it was held on April 2.
This year the two clubs joined together to do some painting and touch ups at the LKCC. A fun day was enjoyed by all and the community centre walls looked much improved.

Our supply of Claxton Fruit Cake is dwindling fast. Sales have stopped at the Lambton Mall (this will be re-evaluated on Thursday Dec 23) and we no longer have any cakes left at the Lochiel Kiwanis Centre. There was still some left at the TD Canada Trust branch at the corner of Christina Street and London Road as of Thursday Dec 16, 2010. Thanks for supporting the many projects of the Kiwanis Club of Sarnia and making this years fund raising project a success.

Teddy Bears and Colouring Books Donated to Bluewater Health Paediatric Unit

On September 22 members of the Kiwanis Club of Sarnia presented Teddy Bears and Giant Colouring Books for patients in the Paediatric Unit at Bluewater Health. These items were purchased at the recent Kiwanis International Convention in Las Vegas as part of a fund raiser.

Staples 2010 Back to School Project

The Kiwanis Club of Sarnia has been leading the charge for this event for the past 8 years, 5 with the current Manager, Lynn Faubert, at our local Staples store in Sarnia. Every year has proven to be a winner for the children of south Sarnia and Forest schools. This year Staples did things a bit different. Customers could either purchase a pre-made kit of supplies or could just make a monetary donation. Monetary donations equalled approximately $5418 including a donation by the Seaway Kiwanis Club which was split equally between 8 schools that responded to Lynn at Staples with their "wish lists". The supplies were delivered on Wednesday, Sept. 15th by members of the Kiwanis Club of Sarnia and Sarnia/Lambton Golden K. Receiving schools were very pleased that they were able to submit their requirements to more closely match their actual needs within each school. Thank you to the schools that participated this year. Kits were also donated to the Inn of the Good Shepherd for distribution to their clients in need of help at back to school time. We hope that our service to you is valuable!

Again this year the Kiwanis Clubs of Sarnia, Sarnia Lambton Golden K, Forest held a fund raising BBQ at the Staples Store in conjunction with the Back to School Project. Money raised will be used to help fund the three Lambton County Kiwanis Clubs projects.

Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre

This project was started in 1985 by the Kiwanis Club of Sarnia in cooperation with the City of Sarnia. It’s main mission is to provide competitive office space for community minded organizations, as well as social and recreational facilities for our community. Located at 180 College Avenue North, Sarnia, Ontario.

The Kiwanis Room is available for rent for occasional use or regular basis for up to 8o people. Suitable for meetings, special events or parties. Overlooks McGibbon Park.

Staples/Kiwanis Partner in Back to School Project

Lynn Faubert, Manager of the Sarnia Staples store and all her staff each year ask their customers to assist them in providing school supplies for those families that find themselves in challenging finanacial stituations as their children return to school in the fall. This year Staples was able to make up 1288 kits for distribution to 11 local schools and agencies such as the Inn of the Good Shephard and the Organization for Literacy-Sarnia/Lambton.

Staples gets help from Kiwanis clubs in Sarnia and Forest to contact schools and agencies to determine their needs and distribute the Back to School Supply kits assembled by Staples to the schools and agencies. Kiwanians helping this year were Norm Tomback (Kiwanis Club of Forest), Dave Marshall and Mac MacDonald (Sarnia-Lambton Golden K), Wayne Scarrow (Kiwanis Club of Sarnia, Inc) as well as Kiwanis organizer Sheila Donald and her son Mike Idle.

Sheila Donald, President of the Kiwanis Club of Sarnia thanks Lynn Faubert and her staff at Staples for continuing to do such a wonderful job during this event. 'Without their commitment to this project, it simply would not happen.". Donald also said "All recipients were thrilled to be on the receiving end of this project." so they can give assistance to their students and clients with their back to school needs.

Inspiring Speakers at KI Convention

The special guest speaker at the opening session was Judson Laipply. His message was changes is inevitable and stop trying to stop it. If you don’t change you will be swept way by it or become extinct. For the first time in our history we have five different generations living all at once and you must use different techniques to reach, work and communicate with each one. Some of the sessions dealt with modern social media such as Facebook, Blogs and Twitter –tools necessary to reach a new audience and a society embracing new methods of communication, learning and interacting. Jason Laipply has one of the most viewed videos on You Tube – The evolution of dance. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMH0bHeiRNg His message is life may not be the party you hoped for but while we are here we might as well dance.

One of the sessions I attended was making the most of today’s media to market your club. During the session they showed how easy it is to get yourself on the internet. The presenter posted a clip on You Tube of the people attending the session.

Dr. Gray Heppner, deputy commander, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research was honored for pursuit of malaria vaccine. He was the 2009 World Service Recipient. He told the convention that every 30 seconds a child dies of malaria. The cost of treatment is $7 per person but in the developing countries of the world this cost is prohibitive. Col Heppner is working on developing a vaccine to rid the world of malaria. If we can eliminate the parasite form humans the disease will be eliminated as we are the only reservoir for it. Mosquitoes only act as the vector to transmit it.

KI Convention Nashville 2009

Sheila Donald and I joined over 5000 other Kiwanians at the Kiwanis International Convention in Nashville on June 25th to 27th. We brought home a number of useful ideas and had a chance to meet with Kiwanians from around the world. Convention attendance is rising. CEO Rob Parker reported that Kiwanis membership is stabilizing in the US and Canada and growing elsewhere. Service leadership programs are also growing and Kiwanis hopes to tap into this resource for future growth. Also the average age of Kiwanis is decreasing. KI is looking at pathways to attract people in their 20s and 30s to Kiwanis. The organization has had a strong financial performance with budget surpluses for the last three years so there will be no dues increases.

Dr John Button was formally introduced as the International Trustee for Canada and the Caribbean. All proposed amendments were passed except the elimination of the magazine exemption for spouses. The magazine exemption will be continued for spouses as speakers felt this made the organization more family and environmentally friendly by eliminating duplicate copies being delivered to one address. This exemption only saves $8 per year. People who want to support KI can pay the $8 and receive 2 copies of the magazine or have one copy directed to a library or other institution.
The voting on amendments and candidates for office went very quickly this year. For the first time electronic voting took place using hand held devices. This meant the business session could be conducted in one afternoon and the results were known with minutes by the convention.
